i don’t think the statue of liberty or the house of opera in sidney deserve to be in there…. sure they’re nice but they’re not even close to being as impressive as the old and new (or finalist) 7 wonders

This is lame. Putting up monuments for a popularity contest so that people can vote for what someone wants to “officially” call the seven wonders of the world? A popularity contest does not make something a “wonder.” Hence the inclusion of the Christ the Redeemer statue over the pyramids at Giza. I’m not sure how that can be considered such an amazing feat of man.

Clearly, elo, you have never seen the Statue of Liberty in person. It is an amazing and awe inspiring monument, a symbol of freedom for all who search for it. Countless immigrants seeking a better life came to the U.S. through Ellis Island and the first thing they saw that brought hope was the Statue of Liberty. If that isn’t worthy of being on this list, then none are.

The Pyramids were not finalists. Since they were an original 7 wonder, they were automatically passed in

I visited Chitzen-Itza in 1994. I stayed in a little place called Mayaland, a few hundred yards behind the park. As I had arrived only an hour before closing time, I hurried through down the dirt path through the jungle to find the location of the pyramid, El Casstile, shown in the photo. The next morning I was up well before dawn, and entered the park through the miraculously unlocked back gate and, in the pre-dawn jungle darkness, made my way back to the pyramid. I climbed its steep and narrow steps, on hands and feet because there was no light save the stars, to the top. I sat in the doorway of the priests sacrificial alter on the top, waiting for sunrise, expecting to be facing east. I was wrong, it faced west, and because I was wrong I experienced a natural phenomena, “White Glory”, in which two perfectly white, perfectly round rings appeared in the air before me, one ring inside the other…and I remembered a line from Vaughn “I saw Eternity the other night/Like a great ring of pure and endless light…”. It was one of the defining moments of my life.
