The art of the lego brick

27 11 2007

Nathan Sawaya is a New York-based artist who creates awe-inspiring works out of some of the most unlikely things. His recent North American museum tours feature large-scale sculptures using only toy building blocks. LEGO® bricks to be exact.

Ah, absolutely amazing. I used to have trouble making simple towers from legos. What is wrong with me?

sweet stuff dude…i really like the trees both the 2d and 3d, maybe not so many pictures of you with the art though? everyone knows how big a lego brick is there is no need for you to be in the pics to establish scale

You look like a giant douche.

No one really plays with legos anymore.

Grow up and put some shoes on.

For me it’s 3D pixel art. It is so sad the creations are so lame. I wish I could see some old videogames heroes, or stuffs more related to the abandonware community.
I know, sounds like geek. Whatever ;-)

i think you should really make this into a business, i know i would buy one , and ty i do think that he should still take pictures with him in it. it is creative art so he can do what he wants, and besides i did’t think the last picture of the pencil was that big until i saw him standing next to it

Very cool stuff. I’d have to agree with ty, though, Nathan’s smiley face gets quite annoying along the way. It only serves to remove focus from the art itself.

Saw an exhibit in Appleton Wi, it was great. T-Rex Skeleton was cool and the 3d face in the box was awesome!

Awesome work!! I can’t help but wonder how many times everything fell apart and he had to start all over. Thats a time consuming hobby you have there.

Where do you get the astronomical number of Legos required for those creations? Are they donated by Lego?

The candy cane and the cat pics are too gay. I mean that in a bad way. The art is inspired, imo. I’d like to see a larger version of the earth … and a rendering of “The Kiss”, the sculpture.

Great stuff! I really like the face in the wall one especially. The reproduction of “Starry Night” was also very appealing.
I played around with doing some of Piet Mondrian’s “Composition”’s with Legos several years ago, intending it to be a statement on how childish I thought Mondrian’s squares and rectangles were. These are a far better use :)
Incidentally, @Katelin: you sound like you would be SO much fun to be around. Somewhere in-between a census taker and Eeyore.
