Alex Queral Phone Book Art

1 06 2010

Alex Queral does these carved heads out of phone books (then painted with acrylics).  In his Artist’s Statement, he says:

I carve the faces out of phone books because I like the three-dimensional quality that results and because of the unexpected results that occur working in this medium. The three-dimensional quality enhances the feeling of the pieces as an object as opposed to a picture.

In carving and painting a head from a phone directory, I’m celebrating the individual lost in the anonymous list of thousands of names that describe the size of the community. In addition, I like the idea of creating something that is normally discarded every year into an object of longevity.

Alexander Korzer Robinson Book Art

18 05 2010

With a background in psychology, Alxander Korzer Robinson‘s art focuses on the notion of the “inner landscape”.

The cut book art has been made by working through the books, page by page, cutting around some of the illustrations while removing others. The images seen in the finished work, are left standing in the place where they would appear in the complete book.  As a final step, the book is sealed around the cut, and can no longer be opened.

Using generally discarded materials, these books regain new purpose. They are no longer tools to learn about the world, but rather a mean to gain insight about oneself.
