Meet the face mountain Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.

1987. Ruth Ziolkowski in front of the upper 70 feet f Crazy Horse’s “face” before detail work began on the nine-story-high face.

April 1990. Detail work and “polishing” had revealed much of the forehead.

February 1991. Work had begun on the eye openings and the nose as beginning to take rough form.

June 1991. The 33′ forehead had been shaped and the oval of the right eye was cut.

August 1993. Crazy Horse’s nose emerged in space during this famous blast, with eyelids shaped and pupils simulated.

July 1994. Blasting continued on the left heek with the nose and cheekbones shaped and work beginning on the lips. carving mountain 7

August 1996. A 31-foot-long stone pillar was “shaved” off the face in his 54-borehole blast as work progressed to the chin.

1998. Participants on the annual June hike up the mountain give size perspective to the completed face, dedicated June 3, 1998.

That does not look as good as the mountain did.

This is silly becuase anyone who knows history knows that there are NO photos of Crazy Horse. He was afraid of letting his image be taken. So if youre going to destroy a mountain in the name of art why not use a face that you are SURE is the face of that person.

I thought it was going to end up Homer Simpson from the first few pix.

Yes, there are pictures of Crazy Horse and it does look like him. They can blow up the mountain if they want as long as they have the right – besides they did the same thing for those 4 dead guys.

Brush up on your native culture, read a history book and consult a lawyer if your panties are in a twist.

well they paint pictures of Jesus Christ too and I know there are no Photos of Him either.

My mom went to see that memorial last year. It’s still not finished. She said that Mt. Rushmore could fit into the face of the Horse itself, it’s that big.
They’re doing it without any government funding. It’s all donation. I appreciate what they’re doing. Everyone else out there being such a negative nancy about it needs to just calm down.

love it! and is does look like crazy horse. i say it’s about time we celebrate the natives, we carved their murders in a mountain…
